Rayon and polyester are two types of fabrics used in the textile industry, and rayon swabs and polyester swabs are common supplies for us. Although rayon is classified as a semi-synthetic fiber, it is made from natural raw materials, while polyester is a synthetic fiber. The main difference between rayon and polyester is that rayon shrinks, wrinkles and tears easily like cotton, while polyester resists wrinkles and shrinkage.
What is Rayon?
Rayon is the first man-made fiber in the textile industry and is considered a semi-synthetic fiber, meaning it is neither natural nor synthetic. It is made from wood pulp, which is a natural raw material based on hemicellulose. As such, it is similar to cotton and linen, which are made from natural fibers.
Rayon is soft, comfortable, breathable, and also wicks moisture. In fact, it is the most absorbent of all cellulose. This absorbency makes it ideal for summer wear. Rayon fabrics also drape very well. However, like other natural fiber fabrics, it is prone to wrinkling and tearing.
However, the various properties and characteristics of rayon also depend on its processing, additives and other factors. There are four main types of rayon fabrics.
◾ Ordinary rayon
◾ High moisture modulus rayon
◾ High strength modulus rayon
◾ Copper Ammonia Rayon
◾ Rayon is also sometimes blended with other fabrics to reduce cost, softness, luster, water absorption and other different properties.
What is Polyester fiber?
Polyester is made from synthetic fibers. It is a strong and durable fabric that is relatively resistant to wrinkles. This fabric is not suitable for warm weather because it tends to stick to the skin once the wearer starts to sweat. However, it is suitable for cold weather because it retains warmth. Polyester is also stretchy, so it tends to resist tearing and abrasion. Also, polyester fabric is not very soft and does not drape well. However, it does not require as much care as cotton. Clothes made of polyester can be washed frequently and treated with **sexual detergents. Because of its durability, it can be worn while performing recreational activities or heavy work.
Compared to natural fiber fabrics such as cotton and linen, polyester is very inexpensive. Polyester is blended with cotton to make polyester-cotton, which has the advantages of both.
The Difference Between Rayon and Polyester
Rayon: Rayon is a semi-synthetic fiber.
Polyester: Polyester is a synthetic fiber.
Rayon: Rayon is worn in warm climates.
Polyester: Polyester is suitable for cold climates.
Shrinkage, abrasion and tearing
Rayon: Rayon tends to shrink, wrinkle and tear, just like natural fibers such as cotton.
Polyester: Polyester resists wrinkles, tears and shrinkage and is more durable than rayon.
Rayon: Rayon curtains drape very well.
Polyester: Polyester does not drape well.
Rayon: Rayon will shrink and stretch after washing.
Polyester: Polyester can be washed and worn.
Rayon: Rayon fabrics are very smooth.
Polyester: Polyester fabrics are not very smooth.
Both rayon and polyester swabs are quality sampling tools.
